Watchdog probe into X Factor final, Was It Rigged?

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has asked ITV to hand over information relating to the final of the X Factor.

The show was plunged into controversy after hundreds of viewers claimed that they could not get through to vote for Welsh runner-up Rhydian Roberts on Saturday evening.

Despite being the favourite to win he lost to Scottish singer Leon Jackson, who is now expected to land the Christmas Number One.

The regulator confirmed earlier this week that it was investigating the final of the X Factor following complaints from viewers.

The fact that Ofcom has asked ITV for the information was revealed in a letter to Culture Secretary James Purnell. It said it had also asked ITV for the full findings of its Deloitte report into problems with participation-TV on programmes such as Saturday Night Takeaway.

The broadcaster was criticised for not publishing the full report in October.

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards wrote: "The Deloitte review publicly identified seven programmes or series where failures occurred (Soapstar Superstar, Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Ant and Dec's Gameshow Marathon, I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, X Factor, Dancing On Ice and The British Comedy Awards).

"We have therefore asked ITV for the full findings by Deloitte on each of these programmes and for all other relevant information on all of these programmes (including of course information necessary for us to be able to assess the most recent set of complaints received over the past few days)."

He added: "This should assist us to complete our thorough investigation into these programmes."

This happens every year. The public should be entitled to more transparency with the votes cast which would then give the public who voted an idea each week who is at the top of the leader board. Also it would see if the judges are as expert as they make out to be, instead of all this self-interest, they would have to then start judging on the talent each week. It would give the public an idea of which judge is better at judging talent etc. There should be a judge on the panel who is totally impartial because all the judges are interested in is their own acts etc. It is wrong that the public cannot see how many votes have been cast each week. It is our money after all. This could be shown after the judges have made their comments, in that way the judges will have to use their expertise to see if it matches the public vote etc.
No. I do not think it was a fixed because Leon has a lovely voice but Rydian has a beautiful voice as well and if there was a hitch in the phone lines, which there well could have been, he should be given a record contract as well. Good Luck to Leon and I hope he makes it to No. 1 and will be looked after. Please can we have more of ~Rydian though as well. By the way, who was winning by the 1% when the presenter announced there was only 1% between them ? Would like to know that. How could then someone win by another 9% as Leon won by 10%. That is quite an increase in such a short space of time. It might be that the phone system was not able to take the volume of calls, which then needs to be looked at.?
and the X-factor Management needs to make good by giving Rydian a contract as well. Something needs to be sorted out next time, otherwise we will have the same problem all over again.

the x factor vote was fixed. simon cowell knew before the phone lines closed that leon was going to win, its a travesty, and itv should be heavily fined

Well I think Leon has a wonderful singing voice, and he deserved to win, vocally Rydian is better but that isnt what its all about, you can have the best singing voice in the world but if thats just what you have you wont appeal to the watching public, Leon on the otherhand had a good voice, good looks a lovely down to earth personality and total likeability so theres your "package" remember you cant please everyone, look at Rod Stewart his voice isnt for all but he has likeability. Sorry folks but Rydian was weird, stiff as a board and no sex appeal at all, Leon appeals to the girls as he is a hottie.
